The Beginning of Illimani

Illimani was founded 30 years ago by Eric Beek. During his studies in Tropical Agricultural Engineering, Eric spent time in Bolivia, initially researching traditional irrigation in the highlands.

However, he soon realised that importing quality coffee would benefit Bolivia more than many ongoing projects. Eric’s coffee journey took him to Bolivia’s coffee regions during harvest.

Back in the Netherlands, he placed his first order of 1,500 kilos from a local La Paz roaster, inspired by the unique, wine-like flavours of Bolivian coffee.

With the help of Simon Levelt, who roasted and packaged the coffee, and a logo designed by a friend from the Rietveld Academy, the Andes and Inca brand was born in March 1993, quickly becoming a favourite in organic stores.

Connecting with cooperatives in Yungas, Eric earned fair trade certification and transitioned to organic certified coffee in 1997, just as the organic market began to grow.

The Dutch coffee scene also evolved with the rise of quality coffee and espresso bars, encouraging many to brew better.
